The last reply covered to two non FF games by Square-Enix that I would recommend - Star Ocean and DragonQuest. But if you like Final Fantasy, see if you can get hold of 'The Lord Of The Rings: The Third Age'. It's a shameless copy of Final Fantasy, right down to summoning the odd beasty to help you out. It get's very tough during the Helm's Deep section with hardly a moment to breathe as you go from one battle to the next with no time to heal or save. It doesn't quite have the charm of Final Fantasy and if you have the DVDs of the movies, you quickly tire of the endless movie sequences and it doesn't help that many of the characters look so simillar to each other either.

Another couple of good games you may enjoy as a Final Fantasy player (but not by Square-Enix) are Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate II. Both are for the PC, so if you can find copies, you may have to download a patch to update to newer computers. Like the Final Fantasy series, there is a bit more going on than just the moronic hack & slash of beasties. There are decent stories to unravel here and some interesting characters as well.

If I can make one more recommendation ...

Myst.

There is a whole series of these and they are very different from what you are used to. No fighting whatsoever, but the thing they share with Final Fantasy is wonderful landscapes to explore. There are some devilish puzzles to solve to boot. The original Myst is starting to look a little bit dated now, but only in the way you move from frame to frame within it's world. Still, considering that it's been around for about 15 years and still manages to get rereleased every now and again, it means it's a classic that new generations of gamers happily discover again and again.

I also want to add to Lisa N's comments about FFVIII. I agree totally. Yes VII is amazing, but don't let anyone tell you that VIII is any less worthy - a totally wonderful game with an amazing story. It has a special place in my affections because it was the first Final Fantasy game I ever played. I can't praise it enough. If there is a downside, it's that the attack/defense bonus system in VIII is linked to spells and collecting spells is very time consuming in VIII. But what's the rush? This is Final Fantasy and who in their right mind would ever want to rush through a Final Fantasy game? So yes - if you see FFVII and VIII, don't think twice - snap them up. You'll very quickly forget the now retro-looking graphics and just become absorbed by the wonderful stories. And you'll be humming the battle music to VIII in your sleep. LOL

Sorry - had to add something else. You say you like racing games. For a new twist, try SSX3. SSX On Tour is OK too, but not as much fun as SSX3. These are snowboarding games and they are amazing fun. The sense of speed and overall control is wonderful. They make for a nice change and are a great way to release a bit of frustration if you are stuck in a role-playing game and need a break. Plus, you can plug in a second controller and play two-player mode with a friend. You should certainly be able to pick up SSX3 as a budget title now, so it's also amazing value for money. Avoid the PSP version of SSX On Tour - utter rubbish!

My two favorite non-Final Fantasy Square-Enix games are Dragon Quest VIII and Star Ocean - Till the End of Time. They are both RPGs for the PS2. Another really fun RPG (but it's not by Square-Enix) is Dark Cloud 2.

Xenosaga is a pretty good RPG.
Dragon Quest VIII is pretty good too *it can be slow at times though...*
.Hack//Sign is ok. But I feel, that it plays out like like a bunch of sidequests and that can be annoying to peop.e
Star Ocean Till The End of Time, I found to be pretty similar to FF 10. There isn't turn based fights it's a little more real time but it has a really long in depth story to it.
If you want a REALLY good RPG try Disgaea. It use to be hard to find for under 80 dollars. But sincethe announcement of the rerelease of it for PSP the price has dropped and you can get it at the price of a normal game now.
If you were willing to go back to PS1 games you could hunt for Legend of Legaia, it has an awesome story line.
Another older game that is pretty good is the Final Fantasy VII and VIII. Don't let anyone tell you VIII is bad. You need to play it for yourself. Most 'fanboys' go against all Final Fantasy that is not VII so take their advice with a grain of salt.
I'm always online and you can message me any time! I am always up to talk about video games:D

That's pretty much the good games Square Enix has to offer from what you mentioned. Well, Dragon Quest VIII is a very good RPG as well. Square Enix is quickly becoming a mediocre game developer fast IMHO.

Check out Gamespot or IGN for some of their reviews on Dragon Quest VIII or any other Square Enix games.

depends what consoles you have got... there are plenty of other game makers besides square enix that makes pretty decent games. Some good ones for PC are Bio Shock, Starcraft 2 (I think its coming out soon), The elder scrolls (Oblivion is quite good).
