Satellite. It was about the size of a basketball, so it would be impossible for it to hold a human-being.

Sputnik 2 (Russian: СпÑÑник-2, Satellite 2) was the second spacecraft launched into Earth orbit, on November 3, 1957, and the first to carry a living animal, a dog named Laika. It was a 4 meters (13 feet) high cone-shaped capsule with a base diameter of 2 meters (6.5 feet). It contained several compartments for radio transmitters, a telemetry system, a programming unit, a regeneration and temperature control system for the cabin, and scientific instruments. A separate sealed cabin contained the dog Laika (leading to the spacecraft being dubbed "Muttnik").

I remember when the first Sputnik went up and orbited the earth. There were a lot of very scared Americans at that time. I think it's true that Sputnik II carried a dog into orbit, and I remember many Americans being somewhat embarrassed that the Russians could send a dog up and we couldn't even send an unmanned satellite up. And then they sent a woman up before we did. In the early days of the "Space Race", the U.S. was woefully behind, but that turned around very quickly, and we've never been behind again. God Bless you.

It was the second satellite launched by the Soviet Union after Sputnik 1. It carried a dog into space. It was definitely relevant as the dog was the first living creature to go into space (and unfortunately also became the first living creature to die in space).

All the Sputniks were orbiting satellites.
If you look on wikipedia under "satellites" or "space program" you will find all kinds of useful information for your report.
