First, as a red sox fan I didn't want him back in 04 when they tried to trade for him and i don't want him now. Second, A-rod hasn't played shortstop in three years so he might not be as good defensively as he was previously. Third, that payroll would be too much, even for the sox to have A-rod, Lowell, Manny, Ortiz, Drew, Beckett. and good luck trying to trade Lugo with that contract. The only way the Sox do this is if they are content with only two world series titles.
Resign Lowell. I think that chant pretted much sums up how most Red Sox fans feel.

Lowell, for sure. Even Varitek carried a sign saying "Resign Lowell" on the Duck parade today. Not A-Rod. Hopefully A-Rod is going to the Dodgers and Lowell will stay with the Red Sox.

I'm curious as to why those who aren't Red Sox fans are suddenly advocating the team signing Alex Rodriguez.
I'll propose this just for the sake of conversation - if Boston is the team that gets Rodriguez, they'll be doing what you believe is the right move.
If, by chance, it turns out this way, you non-Red Sox fans can't say boo about, "oh, they are nothing more than a team buyin' a championship, they suck, what a bunch of suckers...mercenary collectors!!!!"
Is that a deal?
(For the record, I hope they take the practical approach and do whatever it takes to keep Mike Lowell around as a cornerstone that leads the organization into the next decade)

The sox have got to keep Mike Lowell. He is a key element to their team. I agree with Adam that the Red Sox should do whatever it takes to keep Lowell and keep A-rod far away.

Generally people want Lowell but it depends what he asks for. He won't have a better year then 07 so the contract can't be that big. If Lowell doesn't resign then A-rod would be a great addition but I doubt he'll want to resign with another large market...especially on the other side of the fence.

OK let me say this 1st. Red Sox Nation is a rip off of Raider Nation. I'm not a Raider Fan, but a Bay Area man, so this term has been tossed around by us for many years. Plus The SOx are a bunch of cocky Yankee wannabes lead by Manny aka Bob Marley...lol
Naw Lowell is a better fit for The Sox. He's a team guy as opposed to Mr. Me-Rod.

I think I speak for most Yankees fan when I say we would LOVE nothing more than Boston getting A Rod. As much as I hate the Red Sox, why would you want him, you would be better off having the bat boy play 3rd or SS, you will save $400 million, plus the bat boy might actually get a clutch hit, something A Rod has never done.

I'd imagine their happy with Mike Lowell...but there's no denying A-Rod's regular season production pretty much destroyes Mike. And they don't have to take A-Rod as a 3rd baseman...he's a natural shortstop. I think they should do that and get rid of Julio Lugo.
Think about it all you BoSox fans. If you get rid of Julio Lugo you've just added a beast and a gold glove quality SS to your team. The question is...his playoff performance. Imagine this Red Sox Batting order...
1. Dustin Pedroia
2. Jacoby Ellsbury (or Youk)
3. A-Rod
4. Big Papi (David Ortiz)
5. Manny Ramirez
Think about it...who would you walk..? 3 beasts in a row! A-Rod, Big Papi, and Manny! Beast x3!

If I'm the Sox, I'm looking for ways to keep Mike Lowell. I want nothing to do with Alex Rodriguez, who is the baseball equivalent of - Adam Archuleta (known to Tony Kornheiser fans as the cause of all the world's problems).

A-Rod is by far the BEST player in MLB. He hit 54 hr's this year and more than 150 rbi's.
Not to mention his defensive skill and his clutch performance, A-Rod's biggest problem is going to be $. The Yankees are the richest team in baseball and A-Rod was the most paid player therefore had a hard time from the fans.
I'm a Braves fan, I still like A-Rod though b/c he is a fantastic player. I've heard he wants to go to Florida though as well as Barry Bonds, I'm hoping not b/c that would be a big threat to the Braves.
