We had a 70 year old tour guide that said he refused to call the wall the 'green monster' and I forgot to ask why...does anyone here know why he would do that?

The "Green Monster" was originally built in 1912 with the same dimensions as it is now but was not painted green until 1947. The actual term "Green Monster" was given to the wall actually making fun of the home Red Sox because at the time their power lineup were all righty's which leads to more than usuall; a hit to left field, thus preventing home runs and leaving them with only singles, doubles, and even causing outs.

Probably just a grumpy old guy who's stuck in his ways =) The wall wasn't painted green until about 60 years ago. The original wall was made of wood. Maybe he just wants to keep it historical, which is ridiculous to me but whatever.
*Edit* See? 1947 - 60 years ago.

It is kind of like people at wrigley that wear the shirts saying there should be no lights..On a side done I took the tour and I pointed out the dents in the wall. The tour guide corrected me and called them marks. He said that all Red Sox's fans hate "Bucky Dent" so they never use that term.

It was merely referred to as the left field wall before about 30 years ago. A purist might not refer to the wall as the green monster as being too "pink hat." Either that or he refers to Wally as the green monster
