The Detroit Tigers traded 2 top minor league prospects for Edger Renteria, the Braves SS, who hit .332 this season.

Because they just traded two prospects for Edgar Renteria. Since Sean Casey became a free agent at the end of the season, they decided to move Guillen over to first (he saw some time there in the '07 season) and acquired Renteria. Renteria is a good shortstop, he won the SS Gold Glove in 2002 and 2003 when he was with the Cardinals and he can hit (a .332 season average proves that). Look for the Tigers to do well this upcoming season.

The Tigers traded for Edgar Renteria who will play shortstop and Guillen will move to first base.

He is being moved to 1B for several reasons:
1. His range is limited now due to knee problems.
2. Tigers need a 1B as they will not resign Sean Casey.
3. Guillen still has power and the position is a power slot.
4. Renteria gives the team more range, a decent hitter for average and more speed.

Carlos agreed to play 1st base BEFORE the season ended.
The Tigers knew that they were not going to re-sign Sean Casey, and Guillen (being the stud he is) said it's ok.

All the answers above are totally correct, and I especially love the one where the guy he was an Indian killer! CLASSIC!

Guillen has bad knees, they have knocked him out a few games the last couple years, he needs to be standing upright more often to keep them in shape, they went into the off season knowing they were moving him, thats why they traded for Renteria

Because the Tigers went out and got an Indian killer in Renteria .... ie 97 world series!

because with his numbers he can be a great first baseman and replace the power casey never had. it will reduce his chance of injuries which he had problems with last year so he can produce more. good move by detroit.
