why do people sometimes add moss to a garden?

In the coastal redwoods the moss grows 200plus feet in the air. Well, on the branches.

Moss gows where there is moisture.

Moss is beautiful. It adds an aged look, established and calm, to a garden. Ask a Bryophile.

1. Because that is where the moisture lies. 2. I do not know people who deliberately add moss to a garden. Under moist and acidic conditions the moss will establish on its own. At least that is what happens in mine.

People sometimes add PEAT moss to their garden, which is a very different thing from the green moss which grows in shady, moist areas (usually close to the ground). There are so many different kinds of moss, but when you referred to a garden, peat is the one that came to mind. Do a search on "peat moss" for more info. Here is one link that I found:
