most germs are not harmful, and your body needs them to digest food, as well as a few other things.

germs that are dangerous to you are pathogenic. There are less of these than you think, but your lungs are full of them which can cause you all kinds of trouble when your immune system is fatigued.

wheter you like it or not, germs are here to stay

She's right. There are some bacteria that are supposed to be on and in your body, and it would be unhealthy to kill them all off, because then bad bacteria can come in and take over.

There's also some compelling research that suggests that regular exposure to minor bacteria helps keep your immune system on its toes so it's ready to fight off the bad stuff. Plus, if your body has plenty of bacteria to react to, it's less likely to overreact to other things, so you have fewer allergies.

She is right; though not all germs are beneficial, things like hand sanitizer kill the good and the bad.

Humans harbor more than 200 species of bacteria. The biological relation between this "normal flora" and us is mutualistic. They obtain nutrients, we get stimulation of the immune system and protection from certain disease-causing bacteria that are kept on check by the normal flora. You can see pictures of them at:

It also seems that if you don't work out your immune system with common germs, it begins to cause allergic reactions and autoimmune diseases, which are rising sharply in frequency.
