You could try purchasing an air ionizer although they are usually meant to work only in one room. You also have the option of special air freshner crystals that you sprinkle in the carpet. The crystal oil potpourri is something else you can try.

Personally, I dislike scented air fresheners. For eliminating the odor without fragrances and irritants, here's an inexpensive and fragrance free product that is FANTASTIC that I use and know so many other people that use it all around the house. It is a natural fragrance free carbon product called FRIDGE IT odor absorbers -little purple cube with an incredible activated carbon filter inside that is great and eliminates odors for a long time. I think it was originally made for fridge odors which makes sense. It works so much better than baking soda and all those sprays, gels and fragrances that just cover up smells and doesn't get rid of them. Just place a few around problem areas and forget about it. No spills or chemicals or powder to worry about. Each only costs a couple of dollars. I use this product everywhere - it's that good and I really recommend it. You can buy it in kitchen gadget sections in stores like linens and things. I also think camping world sells it. I also know you can buy direct easily within just a few days which is what I do. It's easy and fast Just email to -customerservice@innofresh.com and they will send order form.
Definitely worth trying

You could try a pot-pourri pot, or just some great smelling pot pot-pourri, or perhaps you could try burning some incense, they come with alot of different scents. Sometime if I have alot of lemons I cut them up and boil them and they give off a wonderful fresh scent. And during the holidays I simmer cinnamon sticks, allspice, nutmeg on the stove in a small saucepan and it makes the whole house smell festive and alive and happy> I buy febreeze and use it on my curtains, carpet and upholstery also. Maybe you should open the windows and air everything out wash the curtains, clean the carpet , shampoo the upholstery and then you can start from scratch but you asked about alternatives. Try these ideas, they are inexpensive and you may like the results. Happy smells to you lol

You are right that candles and air fresheners don't do the job. I have found a new product that does. The Glade and Oust candles that are new work. The new package comes with the glass holder. The "candles" are magnetic and fit on the base. They burn until they disappear and do a remarkable job of scenting the house and clearing odors. My husband loves his occasional cigar and believe me they really clear that scent out of the house. I burn two of them at a time every night just for the scent and my preference if the fresh linen. They are available in all stores.

You only mask the bad odors when you use items as the other answers suggested. You need to air your home by opening all the windows daily. It doesn't matter what the weather is outside. Fresh air is the only natural, sure way to get rid of just regular living smells.
You can only mask the smells for so long & it will become worse as time goes on.
Also keep your bedding & rugs on the floor clean & dry. Shake rugs at least weekly outside & wash them when needed. Change sheets at least weekly. (or more) Wash blankets, comfortors or bedspreads every 3 to 4 months.
All of these items will smell of body odors even if you are clean about yourself.

I filled an old vase with a bunch of incense and set it on the table. You don't have to burn it it already smells nice!
