Hey there,
I got your answer Fluorine was discovered by by a chemist named Joseph Henri Moissan in 1886. I even checked this answer with all of my science teachers. They even recondmend that you use this website. http://www.mvschools.org/ms/projects/html/black/fluorine.htm
Any ways you can use some of the information from each website. I had to do the same thing, but mine was Francium. Good Luck.

Fluorine was discovered by Karl Scheele in 1771, recognized as a halogen in 1825, and included in Mendeleev's periodic table of 1869. Fluorine is so active that it existed only in compounds and all efforts to isolate the element failed. Because of its high corrosiveness/toxticity, early fluorine chemists died from fluorine poisoning and the element was dubbed "Tiger of Chemistry." Fluorine, from Latin "fleure" meaning to flow, is the 13th most abundant element in the earth's crust and the most reactive of all elements--it even forms compounds with noble gases.
Henri Moissan (1852-1907)
In 1886, French chemist Henri Moissan attempted to isolate fluorine. Since platinum was one of the few substances that might resist fluorine, Moissan constructed equipment from this metal platinum and lowered the temperature (-50°C) to reduce fluorine's activity. Then he passed an electric current through a solution of potassium fluoride in hydrofluoric acid and achieved his goal--fluorine was finally isolated. In the electrolysis figure shown below, fluoride ions are oxidized at the positive electrode (anode) producing fluorine gas. Moissan made a full study of the properties of fluorine and its reactions with other elements. Shortly after receiving the 1906 Nobel prize in chemistry, Moissan suddenly died (fluorine poisoning?).
Don't trust Wikipedia and don't get fluorine mixed up with fluoride.

Fluorine in the form of fluorspar (also called fluorite) (calcium fluoride) was described in 1530 by Georgius Agricola for its use as a flux [2], which is a substance that is used to promote the fusion of metals or minerals. In 1670 Schwanhard found that glass was etched when it was exposed to fluorspar that was treated with acid. Carl Wilhelm Scheele and many later researchers, including Humphry Davy, Caroline Menard,Gay-Lussac, Antoine Lavoisier, and Louis Thenard all would experiment with hydrofluoric acid, easily obtained by treating calcium fluoride (fluorspar) with concentrated sulfuric acid.
It was eventually realized that hydrofluoric acid contained a previously unknown element. This element was not isolated for many years after this, due to its extreme reactivity; fluorine can only be prepared from its compounds electrolytically, and then it immediately attacks any susceptible materials in the area. Finally, in 1886, elemental fluorine was isolated by Henri Moissan after almost 74 years of continuous effort by other chemists.[3] It was an effort which cost several researchers their health or even their lives. The derivation of elemental fluorine from hydrofluoric acid is exceptionally dangerous, killing or blinding several scientists who attempted early experiments on this halogen. These men came to be referred to as "fluorine martyrs." For Moissan, it earned him the 1906 Nobel Prize in chemistry (Moissan himself lived to be 54, and it is not clear whether his fluorine work shortened his life).

RE:
Who discovered the element fluorine, what year and how did they?
Please, I'm doing a project for chemisty class and I've looked online and there are many different answers. Some say 1771 others say 1886 and there are others too. Also the scientists that discovered it are different too. And I couldn't find how it was discovered. Thank you so much,...
