You might want to consider a Mac. They run OS X, which is different than Windows, but there's a pretty good chance that it'll be a good different. They do seem to cost more than your average Windows laptop upfront, so if cost is of utmost importance, you might want to pass. However, for what you do get from a Mac and what you don't get out of a cheap Windows laptop, it is almost certainly worth it. They're just as good or better than Windows at your average college stuff - writing papers, music, surfing the Web, etc. You might also want to pass if you're a hardcore gamer.

I work for the Geek Squad, and more recently I have been seeing more and more HP/Compaqs bad out of the box. Gateway, suprisingly, has really stepped up recently and is putting out some great products and I rarely see newer models come in for service. If you wanna get away from PC though, you can't go wrong with an Apple.

Dell or HP. Gateway is junk. I wouldn't spend more than 600-800 dollars.

Whatever you get, make sure you get 1gig of ram AT LEAST to run Vista efficiently. That shouldn't be a problem though :p
