The reasons for the embargo are varied.
1. To hurt the country economically
2. Cuba was allied with USSR, so an embargo with Cuba was an indirect embargo with the USSR
3. The US hoped that other countries would follow suit, and as a result cuba would be isolalated and forced to deal with the US. ( This has not worked because the USSR, when it existed, and now Venezuala prop up the economy)
4. Money sent to Cuba, funded and funds revolutions and anti-american movements around the world.

Basically, the embargo aimed/aims to cripple Fidel Castro and his communist regime, but cripling the cuban econommy.

Oppenents say the embargo hurts cuban citizens, while proponents say that the money earned from trade only goes to Castro.

While I do have family in Cuba, I do support the embargo, because, regardless of what critics say, the cuban people dont see any money or goods that result form trade. Castro purchases goods from his allies and then sells these goods, in state run shops, back to the people for outrageous prices. An average cuban might make 9 dollars a month and a bar of soap will cost them about 3 dollars. Also, cubans must exchange these dollars for cuban pesos, which are'nt worth anything. So as a result Castro gets all of the profits of trade while the people are forced to live in squalor. (But that is just my opinion.)

Do you want the government propaganda, or the truth?
The mob pulled strings that would punish Castro and Cuba for seizing the assets of the mob...all those new Casinos and the drug trade and the seaside resorts that were nationalized in 1959. And let me tell you, the mob will wait for a hundered years and when the communist fall, and one day they will, the mafia will reassert their rights to all that property. Thats why there is still an embargo to this day.
Now, you will excuse me before Sammy the Bull comes lookin' for me. Chow, baby

The real reason is politicians looking for votes from the Cuban exiles. No politician wants a political opponent to be able to point at them and say they helped Fidel Castro.
It's a stupid policy that should end.

To isolate the communist country economically and politically in as much as possible, so as to decrease it's chances of 'success.'

It hasn't worked that well. While Cuba has hardly prospered, it has survived.

To keep me from getting good cigars.

All joking aside, I believe it was to hurt the country economically and thereby bring Castro to our side. It was/is mostly punitive.
