Every single Christian holiday, Easter, Christmas, Halloween (which is really All Souls' Day) is on the day of what used to be a pagan feast. The church actually picked the days it did to celebrate these things because that way it could overshadow the pagan feast with a religious one. One day following Halloween (which means All Hallows Eve) is All Saints' Day which is a holy day in the Catholic church. Today the church celebrates all souls and all saints but, as with Christmas, we are never advised not to celebrate or participate in the festivities that are not religious as long as we also keep the day holy. I believe Halloween festivities, as they are celebrated these days, are innocuous and not a problem. It is just people having fun. However, I would not attend a black mass, drink blood or anything like that.

Yes. Without knowing exactly what you read, I imagine it probably claimed Halloween is all about devil worship. It's not. In fact All Hallows Eve actually was begun by the early church as a part of it's method to more easily convert non-Christians. Early on the church would use pre-existing holidays the people they were trying to convert already celebrated and change them a little. It was easier to tell people "Ok, you can continue to celebrate your holidays, but instead of it being about your old gods this is now what it's about." In the case of All Hallows Eve, it was originally meant to be like Christmas Eve, a lead in to the major holiday the next day. That holiday being All Hallows Day (I've also seen it referred to as All Hallowmas as mas was used to denote feast days) Hallow is actually another term for Saint. So All Hallows Day was meant as a day to celebrate the saints, and is still around today as All Saints Day.

All Hallows Eve went on to become All Hallow Even, All Hallowe'en, Hallowe'en, and finally Halloween. It's original meaning in the church has sadly been forgotten and many try to vilify it. This is, of course, based on the fact that the church converted non-Christian traditions to it's own uses. But then if they are going to do that they best vilify all holidays the church converted that are still celebrated today.

Absolutely it's ok! It's a moment in time to have some fun. Put on a costume (favorite super hero, someone you'd like to be, etc.) and have a piece of candy!
