they have little, tiny hairs on them called rhizoids that anchor them to the ground. they are also nonvascular and get their food from the soil, so there is your answer.

Because Moss thrives on moisture... & it's always damper- closer to the ground... Moss adds a softening green "touch" to the Outlines of a Garden- that's why some people add it... :)

Because they like alot of moisture and humidity, secondly, they help to retain moisture in the soil by being a ground cover , only they also enrich the soil instead of robbing it as alot of other ground covers do
