I made plans to go to San francisco on the seventeenth and booked up the hotel the tourist attractions etc. Today i find out that my boss scheduled this mandatory meeting the very same day! Wat do i do? I cannot cancel the transactions or reverse the credit card charges and even if I could there is a steep penalty price! OMG why! I needed a break to get away from everything and this was my weekend to relax. im so panicked and am so stressed! What do i do? Should I tell my boss that i made contractual arrangements and thats exactly what they were, my friend and I are so enthusiatic about this trip!

just do it, tell ur boss that something you cant change or that you cant reschedule came up but don't say what it is, just tell him or her what u need too and nothing more, than get away as fast as you can. You can also act like u r really upset or something during the day to make it seem true but don't say anything about if....... it's not their fault that they read ur body language wrong... or ahhh... ya, tell the truth, if u r caught in a lie it's like the little boy who cried wolf.

Another thing you can do is make a pros and cons list that is completely honest. why is thge meeting so important, what was scheduled first, that sorta thing.. good luck

don't lie, be straight up and you'll feel better and your boss will respect you and trust you more

Oooh, tough luck.
I have learnt to always give my boss a bit of warning ie....I need a few days off next week to _________, just sorting out the details & can let you know soon when exactly that will be.

SOOOOO, just tell him that you had already made a prior personal comittment before his announcing the 'mandatory meeting'. Sorry but you wont be there, if its so important Im sure there will be minutes you can read afterward, or ask him to brief you before you go. (if you say it in a serious, straightforward informative tone - he will get that you aren't asking his permission and it isn't open for discussion...you are telling him!!! be apologetic though)

Think of it this way, if you were sick and in hospital Im sure you wouldn't wheel your bed in to work to attend this meeting
Things happen, life goes on, it shouldn't be that your entire career and prospects hinge off 1 meeting (unless its something you have engineered)

Enjoy your break away, revive, recharge and give it 110% when you get back. :o)

I think you should say you had a death in the family. You could take the honest approach, but your success would depend on whether your boss is cool or not. I would call in the day your leaving and say you can't make the meeting because a family member has just passed away.
