The poster above me pretty much covered all I would have said. There may still be some small towns on the middle of nowhere which allow signals to go into the station, but I doubt it.
Your best bet would be to look around locally. In my experience the smaller companies with a good reputation often provide a better level of service than the multi-nationals.

In the past police departments have received to many false alarms and would charge a fee is they showed up and it wasn't an emergency.
The reason being is that they could have been helping someone that really needed their assistance.
The fee was put in place to deter false alarms.
Today the central monitoring stations handle all of the calls on a monitored system.
They only call the police when it is absolutely necessary.
As mentioned, a local company with a good reputation would probably serve your needs best.
Also, the more difficult you make it to break-in to your home the more likely burglars will just pass it by and look for an easier target.
Here is some information on increasing your homes security without spending an arm and a leg http://wiseeyeshomesecurity.com/home-security-information-part-1/
I hope this helps.

Prior to about 1980, police departments in many small cities and towns actually did monitor burglar alarms. This was mostly done for businesses, but they would monitor homes also. (home alarms were very expensive and not all that common back then)
Now days, most police departments no longer directly monitor alarms. This means that your alarm system must be monitored by what is known as an alarm "central station". The central station receives the alarm, and then calls your local police department.
Central stations are operated by large companies like ADT and Brinks, and there are also "wholesale" central stations that monitor alarms for lots of the smaller, independent alarm companies.

Monitored security systems all go to the monitoring company. There is no security system where calls go directly to the police. That's because it's up to the monitoring company to contact you to determine if it's a false alarm, so the police don't waste their resources on it.
If the monitoring company can't get ahold of you, they call the police or fire department directly. They also call directly if you hit a panic button without calling to tell them it was done by accident.

Do you know how long it could take the police to arrive at your home?
Unless your lucky and the police are already close by, it will take longer than most thefts take to steel from homes.
The best option is to make it very difficult for any thief to get into your home. Thief's look out for easy pickings.
try anti clime paint on walls, extra strong locks on doors & windows etc etc.
