All these things like very very random images, thoughts, and things like that start flooding into my head and COMPLETELY BOMBARD my mind and it's a really uncomfortable thing because it makes my head feel weird(haha I know that sounds stupid!!), and when the images come in front of me, if I try to concentrate on them whatsoever, they like move into the distance and disappear, and al these things become too much at the same time and it feels like my head is going to implode!!
Phew, yeah that's it, can someone please explain why this is happening, (as it only happens when I'm going to sleep), and how to make it stop so I can get to sleep more easily!

Thanks so much in advance!!

Congratulations, you are witnessing the human brain equivalent of the temporary file dump in your computers hard drive. When we sleep our brain converts short term memory into long term. But we cant convert EVERYTHING we have experienced every second of the day. So the brain in essence separates the wheat from the chaff and discards it.

Best way to relieve it is to try winding down before you lay down for bed so you are already relaxed and the process of resting is already begun. And lay off the caffeine before bed say 2 hours or so. Also try reading a book as it will drown out the images and when you feel sleepy turn out the light and see what happens.

Sleep hygiene.
That means preparing body and mind to unwind and relax and get ready for physical/mental rest. Give yourself enough time to uinwind.
NO caffeine after 3 pm. Exercise earlier in the day and not within 3-4 hours of retiring. Eat your heaviest meal mid-day not at night. Alcohol only once or twice a week. If you like to watch tv or read, do it earlier in the evening, not just before bed (why put extra images/thoughts at the top of your mind if it's going to keep you awake?)
Take a warm shower or bath to relax the muscles. Perform little hygiene rituals to create a routine and keep your mind from intense thought.
Remove all televisions, phones, desks, books from your room; just bed and no clutter to create an atmosphere of quiet relaxation.
Practice relaxation techniques; concentrate on relaxing the muscles in your toes, then ankles, then shins, knees etc up to your head. Fixate on one image, maybe a "happy place" like the beach or a mountaintop or field. If you get an image that intrudes, mentally "shoo" it away and focus on your own image. BREATHE- slowly in, slowly out, concentrating on exhaling all the way.
You don't need sleep aids, just a better routine.
Warm milk and cocoa have substances that do make you drowsy. You can also get cd's with beta waves that will help induce sleep. Consider taking a yoga class or meditation- it will help you learn to unwind.
Good luck and happy REM sleep!

WOW! no way! i thought i was the only one out there! lol!! I was gonna ask this question but u were first! lol! ...it happens to me mostly when i havent sleep well, and i cant find any words to describe the images but they all seem to make sense and give solutions to stuff even tho they´re abstract ..i dont know exactly how to explain it...but not so long ago I read on the NY times that when we fall sleep the part of our brain that processes logic and reason shuts down, while the visual part turns on activity and allows us to "see" images in a much richer way than when we´re awake and conscious of our surroundings..i dont know what it is, but´s good to know someone out there kindá understands it. :)

I took a meditation self improvement course called "The Silva Method". I am sure you will understand much better what you are experiencing and learn ways to harness it.
