I've tried shrinking jeans by washing them in real hot water and drying them on the hottest setting. The amount of shrinkage is so slight, however, that it's barely noticeable. If the jeans are 100 percent cotton, they will probably shrink at least a size. But if they're stretch material, which most of the jeans are made of nowadays, the shrinkage is negligible, if at all. I've had the experience that some jeans may appear to have shrunk when you first put them on, but as you wear them, they stretch out and revert back to their original size.

Wash them as hot as possible and put them in a dryer on the hottest setting. If that all fails, the only other option is to have them altered by taking seams in.
