i have a cutlass supreme 84 and the gas meter doenst work how can that be fixed

Is the fuel guage reading up past the full mark? If it is you have an open circuit in the wire to the fuel tank sending unit or an open ground circuit from the sending unit to the body. If memory serves me it should be a pink wire to the tank. Momentarily ground this wire and look to see if the fuel guage drops down. If it does the circuit is good to that point. Then check to see if the sending unit is properly grounded. If your guage reads less than empty you may have the pink wire shorted to ground. There are other possible problems you may have but these are most probable.

Could be a poor ground wire from the tank to body.
Try running a test light from a good body ground to the tank.
If it lights at all or the guage moves, ground the tank.
If not it is probably the sending unit on the top of the tank.

replace it. most are located in the top of the gas tank. If you don't know what you are doing, have a mechanic do it.

you will have to replace the sending unit in the gas tank.
