I had to learn about it because my son is severely allergic to dust mites. It's dead skin follicles, any kind of fabric lint ( clothes, carpet etc..) The doctor said if you could run the air conditioner all year long it wouldn't be as bad, but we have all 4 seasons where we live.

Dust particles are in the air everywhere and they have some weight to them and eventually they settle and if you don't dust it accumulates and adds up to a big mess. That mess when dusted balls up and you have a ball of dust.

Everytime you open a door or window, airborne particles enter the house. Anytime you put on or take off your clothes, fabric fibers become airborne. Whenever you cook, the smoke is airborne particles.
These particles will eventually settle as a layer of dust.

Personally, I think dust is related to bunny rabbits and plastic grocery bags - they multiply when you aren't looking!
