I was a little surprised at first, but after some thought, I decided the last book makes more sense this way.
Think about it: when Grindelwald rose to power as a dark wizard, Dumbledore could have (and perhaps should have) dueled him immediately. And why would he hesitate, since Grindelwald was ultimately responsible for Ariana Dumbledore's death? The strength of friendship alone did not strike me as enough of a reason for Dumbledore NOT to immediately kick Grindelwald's butt, nor the idea that Dumbledore was unsure who actually cast the fatal curse upon Ariana. Those things by themselves should not have stopped Dumbledore from dueling his old friend. Even any guilt Dumbledore may have felt for encouraging Grindelwald's anti-Muggle stance should have, by all rules of common sense, made Albus even more eager to put a stop to the dark magic and violence. But Albus allowed Grindelwald to go on with his crimes for a whole five years before he finally did anything about it. Friendship doesn't explain that kind of procrastination.
But Dumbledore being in love with the guy, now THAT explains the hesitation.

I don't like it at all. I hate that J.K. Rowling just sprung this on us all of a sudden. I mean, I'm not discriminating or anything but I just think it is weird for Dumbledore and it just doesn't work. And now when I read Harry Potter and Dumbledore comes up, all I can think about is how he is gay.

I didn't think that I could love J.K. anymore and she makes Dumbledore gay!! She is a fantastic author and I love that she is all about equality. If you look around, not too many children have a problem with this issue. It is the parents who have the problem. They do not want to take the time to talk to their children. That is the problem with today's society. Parents don't want to take the time or don't feel comfortable discussing the issues facing our children today. Drugs, pregnancy, and many other things kids learn either from their peers or from trying. J.K. is an awesome person and I'm very proud of her.
GO J.K.!!

It didn't really bother me one way or another. I am a bit bemused at some of the things that others have said about it, and JKR's alleged motivations.
I don't think that JKR has an agenda, or is seeking more publicity. I think it speaks to the popularity of the series and the amount of emotional energy that fans have put into the books, that it became a big story.
According to the story I read, she had told the writer of the screenplay for HBP that Dumbledore was gay because there was mention of a female love interest in the screenplay and she had to set them right. Having done that, she might as well have made it public, since it would have eventually come out anyway--she could control when and how it was done. and in any case, this story came out because she was directly asked if Dumbledore loved anyone.
Throughout the series, we know Dumbledore as a tireless and seemingly single-minded fighter against Dark Wizards (at least from Harry's perspective; we do have to remember that Albus is also a great teacher, an alchemist, and important theoretical Wizard--remember the tools and instruments he made himself). But how did Albus become that way?
We learn much about this in DH, with Arianna's story, Aberforth's story and the story of the friendship between Dumbledore and Gellert Grindelwald. In reading DH, it was clear that Grindelwald seduced Dumbledore on a number of levels; intellectually, ideologically, and, by JKR's new revelation, emotionally. We don't know if that seduction was sexual as well, and I'm not sure it is important for us to know.
The revelation completes the picture for us of a man who felt betrayed, injured by one he loved, ashamed at how far he went from rational thought and behavior, how far he really was from what he thought he was.
The up shot is that we now know more completely Dumbledore's motivations for fighting Dark Wizards--his shame at his own tangential contribution to Grindelwald's career, his reluctance to fight him, and, when Voldemort rose, his determination to not to repeat his prior mistake of inaction and to fight Voldemort from the start.
So in summery, It was part of the way JKR viewed Dumbledore and understood him. I don't think it was something that would have come out voluntarily--more likely something that would have made a scholarly article 50 or 60 years from now after she was gone and literary scholar had access to her full notes (assuming she left them to be investigated).
BTW, there is some inkling of this in DH, where Rita Skeeter talks about devoting a chapter in her book about Dumbledore to the Dumbledore/Harry relationship. This is not to say that there was anything improper--but that JKR did put out a hint.

I'm ticked off to the max.
There was no reason for her to mention Dumbledore's so-called sexual preference after the fact.
She did it only for her own agenda. Since the HP phenom had died down, she needed to put the limelight back on herself. Once she did that, she recently announced that she is auctioning off her "personal" copy of "The Beetle and the Bard."
That's the real reason she outed Dumbledore. For her own personal agenda. The hypocritical git.

Not at all.
Actually... i was surprised it needed to be said. I had always thought it was common knowledge, ESPECIALLY since the 7th book.
But that may be due to my love of slash... I make myself more aware of any hints to it in the books I read...
