No bank is going to pay interest that keeps up with the rate of inflation so in the long run, you have less (even after interest) than you started with.

There are investment vehicles that return above inflation - look for those.

The same low interest rates on mortgages and car loans means low interest rates everywhere - including bank accounts. You're not likely to find a high interest savings plan, so look for low fees and good service. I recommend a Credit Union over a traditional bank.
When interest rates are low - Borrow
When interest rates are high - Invest

No. My advice is instead of keeping a savings account at a bank, open a Money Market Fund (note this is different than a money market account you see at banks & credit unions). They typically earn 4-6% annually, and your money is relatively safe. You can even write checks from them.

You can get a savings account and an "Electric Orange" checking account with an ATM card. The interest rate is over 4% right now and has been really great for me for over a year.

paypal pays 4.75% for premium account. it costs you nothing , but to accept a payment. they also give you 1% for using your debit card as a credit card........but the money that stays there is the high percentage, paying once a month. paypal is affiliated with ebay and i have used over 8 years now.

also wamu bank pays 4-5% - WASHINGTON MUTUAL. you can sign up on line & get free something or other
