At one time there were 4 retired U.S. Navy guys working on our team. Our truck driver, a black guy, would come in and make comments about the OLD EX-NAVY RED NECKS.
Well, what was odd was that NONE of us were from below the Mason Dixon Line. Two of us are originally from Michigan, one from near Cleavland, Ohio and one from upstate New York. I, for one, am an intelligent, educated, well versed, well traveled man who has learned 8 languages and I don't wear my hair in a mullet, nor do I own a pick up, chew tobacco or drink Budweiser. It got old after a while and one day our truck driver came in as I was reading at lunch. He asked, "Is that one of those redneck books?" I replied, "It's a book you colored boys wouldn't understand." He got my point and he never used the term REDNECK again, and that was in 1997. Redneck IS a racist term, whether you think it is or not. Isn't it odd how NON-WHITES can make racist remarks to or about whites (watch the non-white comedians), but not the other way around? If I had filed a complaint against our truck driver, it would have been laughed at. Yet if we had used derogatory terms about HIM, we would have been punished according to the regulations of our company and our union (3 days off with no pay for the first offense, 10 days off with no pay for the second offense. Third offense would cause one would to get fired).

I don't think I have ever been racist. Yes I have had others be racist towards me. But who hasn't had someone be a racist towards them?

I have never been racist in my whole life (and I am pretty old).
Unfortunately, quite a lot of people were racist to me for, let's see now roughly 21 years ago (before my children married and left home). I am Caucasian, and the mother of five adopted children from birth, two black sons included. I used to get all kinds of racists remarks from fearful and unhappy people.
Because of the way I acted then, my children had an example of what to say to such prejudice. So when this happened say in school, they treated it with disgust and humor and never negatively. It just rolled off them.
My children grew up to be respected and loved in our neighborhood. If you "hit" back in a positive way, you make the racists feel like fools, which of course they are.

I'm not afraid to say it. Yes, I have been racist towards someone else, and I do feel remorse for what I said.
And yes, of course.
