Why can't American admire simple, honest, good citizen American heroes? In Italy where most famous modern gangsters were born, to be a gangster is second lower than to be a gay men.
They don't admire you and the girl don't fall for you.You just a scumbag, a detritus of society. It come with no surprise that criminality in the U.S.A have always been record high.Every black teenagers want to be gangsters because their idols is alpacino, Robert de niro.African American Gangster rap admire the Italian mafia, whom by the way, use to look down on black people back in the days.Italian mafia is responsible for the infection of Harlem African American population with cocaine and later with crack. The Italian chiefs use to say never sell it to our kids, sell it to the N**r, they have no soul. That's how racist the mafia was during the 1970s.A good portion of newyork city African American population was hook on drugs. The consequence is the Hip-pop generation that was born from their lineage til today

In civilized world that we live in, the mass influence of gangsterism trough hip-pop glorifying lyrics make young kids too adult, too violent than they should be.
It's now becoming very hard to distinguish between hardass criminals and wannabe hip pop style followers. In the movie "Set It Off" with Queen Latifa, you can see how easy a hardcore criminal bank rubbers can look like a simple teenager.
The 17 year old kid in the movie got the same hair cut as the dangerous criminal and got kill by the police who mistakingly though he was the other guy.

I'm not argueing against you. Your right that a lot of our generation admires that gang lifestyle and those types of films. But to be fair there are a lot of indaviduals who go to see crime films just because it's a genre they like, no more than a karate fan watching a kung-fu film. It's entertainment and that's all it is. In no way shape or form would Denzel Washington state that Frank Lucas was a hero. It's just Frank Lucas had just an amazing story you don't see everyday, it re-enforces reality: when you come up in the drug business you will either die or go to jail. Watch the movie and read Frank Lucas's biography. He was making $1,000,000 a day from Heroin sales, yet the police caught onto him and his empire crushed. He spent around 15 years in jail. Now he is an old man realizing his faults. It's great entertainment and an amazing story, but we should learn from it. Many young Americans admire the gang life because of how they take in. but if you have parents there to filter the entertainment My parents (we are Hispanic) told me "This is just a film". And I know that now. It's a great film because I just got out of it right now. I can tell you have seen the Godfather with what they said about African americans. These films have powerful messages, every gangster in each film has fallen. Yet the youth doesn't see that and just see's the violence as somthing cool. Watch American Gangster from my perspective and you will appreciate the story and redemption.

I almost agree except that gangsters are interesting! While this movie will certainly glorify criminals who wouldn't want to delve into the life of a gangster? I do not find gangsters admirable because they are criminals! They kill people, I will probably not see the movie, but I doubt that it is any worse then the slasher films which top of box office. At least this movie features a black person as a star? That's progress, even if he is an antihero. The majority of people do not admire gangsters or their activities and I doubt that this movie will affect culture that significantly.
I am not worried about this movie because I have the chocie whether to succumb myself to it. As do we all. You do not have to see the movie either if it will affect you negatively.

DJH, shouldn't blacks admire the CEOs and successfull people more so than the gangsters?
As to the asker, I don't think we as a society admire the criminality of some of these men, but rather some of their strengths, ability to lead, and being willing to take risks. Actually, most of us do admire honest hard-working americans so try not to stereotype 300 MILLION people next time buddy. You have a good one.

becoming a quote sucessful ganster is nearly as difficult as being a sucessful in any other career. Frank Lucas, was just like the every day ganster u see in the streets with tattooos. He was smart, possibly an IQ just as hi as many lawyers and doctors.

The problem is, most of American youth see the drugs, sex and violence and draw their own conclusion because they don't have a responsible adult to explain it all in the context of reality.
If you look at it in a positive light, the movie kinda exposes everything you are talking about. It's a true story and there is somewhat of a moral to it.

yeh so true to the majority it is so rare that black people especially youths follow anything civilised. their inspiration comes from gangster movies and hip hop music empirical evidence that their state of mind is what brings them to the level that they seem to be proud of bieng in. its so rare that it almost seems odd listening to a black youth speaking properly or speaking with morals and values. Those who do should be the role models.

I hope your not gullable to think we all want to be gangsters just because of a movie...There are plenty of black CEO, polticians, and scientist that are just as admired by blacks than some of these gangsters..
