The stuff near the top of my freezer wont freeze. Could this be because I've got it too full or should I ask my landlord for a new unit?

freezers and refrigerators tend to work best when full, as the items help hold the chill. be sure you aren't blocking the cold air outlets inside the freezer, but if you have checked this and your items won't freeze (or are thawing out), it may be the unit. it never hurts to ask your landlord - better to ask now than come home to a freezer/fridge full of not-so-cold food!

Sounds like your fridge/freezer is very slowly running out of Freon R-12. A re-fill usually lasts for another 10 years, or a new one, which ever is cheaper.

I would have him check it out first. It's his responsibility.
