I know someone that could not talk(or had trouble talking) and acted very violent and unusual around the age of three. She was diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder than. Now she's 14 and she does good at all subjects "including math", and now she's diagnosed with Asperger's. She is a lot calmer and normal. She is lazy as well and thinks in her room a lot about her future and random things. She's not like most autistic children and acts as if she is a typical child now. As if she was never diagnosed with the disorder. Though she is sometimes she is a bit sloppy and clumsy, but isn't that human nature? She gets worried easily sometimes too and loses a few items especially earrings. She is shy but can sometimes be a bit hyperactive. And she and her sister(who is typical) have some trouble following directions sometimes also. I know this because she told me about it. So does she really have an autism spectrum disorder? Does she have ADHD? Was it just a childhood abnormality?

A child diagnosed with autism, can recover to the point of aspergers.High functioning autism.Traits of aspergers include, being shy, needing time alone, uncomfortable in social situations, clumsy, very good at some things, and terrible at other things. It is difficult to diagnose aspergers, because most people who have it seem normal, and can mask symptoms very well. Many older adults have aspergers, and have never been diagnosed. Many kids have it and have never been diagnosed.Anxiety disorder is common, and OCD.Check out some yahoogroups on aspergers and www.wrongplanet.com

My daughter has specific problems. She has received numerous diagnoses also. We recently switched psychiatrists. We were planning to anyway, but her therapist had suggested a brain scan and our new psychiatrist orders them on all of his patients. We had asked her old psychiatrist about one and was flatly refused.

Long story short, the brain scan showed a definite impairment in the cerebellum. What was once defined in vague "mental health" diagnosis now has a specific cause. We are approaching it as a physical impairment not a "hit and miss" mental health diagnosis.

I am not telling you this to say autism, ADD, or any other illness is real or not real. I am just telling you, that symptoms we didn't understand or could not explain have an answer. Might be something you want to try.

The symptoms of Asperger's can be more pronounced early in life. So being diagnosed as autistic, and then downgrading to Asperger's is not surprising. She has a great chance of leading a very normal and healthy life. My husband has Asperger's and some of his biggest symptoms are losing things, not making eye contact, feeling harassed or picked on, great intelligence, lack of "common sense". We have 2 children together and he is a great father. If anything, the Asperger's has helped him with focusing on his schooling. He is working on getting his BA in Chemical Engineering.

Yes she is in the spectrum and no shes not just "lazy" I thought that about my son when he walked he was slow... It turns out he has a vision issue which is connected to autism... Sensory issue overboard everything and this is prob her way of dealing with things.... She sounds alot like my son. Also just because you are on the spectrum you have bad grades. Thats why they want to mainstream as many kids as possible now into the class...... She sounds as if she is doing great by learning how to deal and live with her issues...

It seems that your friend does have ADHD and Asperger's. Asperger's is a milder form of Autism and a lot of the times ADHD is associated with Asperger's. These disorders do run in families. Good luck and I hope this helped. ;)
