It's a non-profit organization. The goal is merely to break even. Since it doesn't sell ads directly, it has to come up with different revenues of funding. There is some corporate support in the form of grants, and foundations and governments also chip in. Listener support is part of the equation too.

NPR is National Public Radio a non-profit organization that is funded solely by it's listeners. The listener's donate money so that NPR broadcast the music and news and special events in any given area. In the Phoenix Az. area I live in it broadcast Classical music by the Masters. It also has public forum call in shows.
In no way what-so-ever is it a "Leech on the American taxpayer!"
