Halloween was originally All Hallows Even
its been shortened over the years the apostrophe was there when the words were put together
then it too disappeared

hallowe'en in full is "All hallows evening".

The apostrophe denotes a missing letter, the whole title has been abbreviated.

The festival was taken from the pre-Christian festival of Samian that celebrated the gathering in of the harvest (northern hemisphere) and the Christian rising of the dead to join their souls.
