The movie is faithful to the book of the same name.
Unlike many animated features, the film faithfully emulated the dark and violent sophistication of the book.
As a result, many reviewers took to warning parents that children might find the content highly disturbing.
It depicts the rabbits' fable, detailing how they came to be, their enemies, and introducing the guiding spirit of the Black Rabbit of Inle.
A peaceful rabbit Warren is disrupted by the concerns of the mystic runt Fiver, who foresees the end of the Warren and convinces others to leave with him; and several rabbits set off only to be stopped by the Owsla. .
They discover Nuthanger farm, which contains a hutch of domesticated female rabbits as well as other animals, including a cat and dog, and unexpectedly are found by Captain Holly.
In a scene that was cut from the theatrical version of Donnie Darko but included on the DVD, Donnie's class watches the Watership Down movie.
Gerry Beckley of the 1970s supergroup America penned a theme song for the Watership Down animated film.
The song was not used for the film, but the group included it on their 1976 album Hideaway.
After a slow start upon release, it became the sixth most popular film of 1979 at the British box office.
Thirty years later, "Watership Down" remains a dynamic, evocative and at times unflinchingly brutal work.

I own a copy of the movie and I've read the book at least three times. I still use words like "hrududu" and "tharn" from time to time.
But then I'm a softie for animals. I've raised cats, dogs, sheep, horses and one llama. Our (with husband) hobby is photographing wildlife. Every year we get involved in a rescue or two.

Yes I do. There were a few scenes in that movie that I still think were pretty disturbing(considering I saw that movie when I was about 10 years old).

Yes, very well. It was on tv a while back. I was surprised how violent it was and how graphic for an animated feature! Then again, the book was pretty graphic, too. It was a very "eye opening" way to view the world of rabbits. Extremely good.

I totally remember it. The scene where the dead bunnies trap the king in his burrow gave me nightmares! Thanks for reminding me, I may never sleep again!
