Hey, I've recently got a Dell Inspiron 9400 from my dad's workmate. When I got it, I was able to change the volume with the buttons on the front and the level would be displayed on the screen.

The computer had a lot of spyware on it so when I uninstalled that I seem to have uninstalled the ability to see my volume changes on the screen. The computer doesn't have the microsoft volume thing in the system tray either so I have no idea whether I'm muted or loud until I hear audio.

It's really annoying. Can anybody help me?

Cheers.

To CHMod - the computer tells me that that feature has not been installed and I have no way of doing it. I tried that already, sorry for not specifiying.

this won't be any help with the main problem you described, but you can place the volume icon back in the system tray:

Start button > Control Panel > Sound and Audio Devices

on the "Volume" tab, make sure "Place volume icon in the taskbar" is checked

don't know what to tell you then... TheHumbleOne's suggestion is best, go to dell.com and try the Support and forums there... good luck

I can't, but Dell can. I have Dells and they offer pretty good support. First jot down the serial number of your PC and Model#, then go to:

http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/product_support/product_support_productfamily?c=us&l=en&product_family=Dimension&s=gen

You might also want to join Dell's Community Forum where you can contact other Dell users.
