You just noticed this? Hmm....
Personally, I'm inclined to think of it like this: When people expect a certain standard of conduct from each other, and make it clear that the standard will be *enforced*, you don't see so much of that attitude.
And no, it isn't *just* about laying the smackdown on mean people either.
It is about showing people, *broadly and in general*, that they Matter. That their actions have consequences and that other people around them *Care* about what they do. It means that we are *letting* people belong to our society and that we *will* look out for them should things go badly.
Because seriously....what's the alternative?
What we have right now? A non-society where people can't be bothered, even when the "other person" is trying to become a *school shooter* and *succeeding* because doctors can't be bothered, counselors can't be bothered, teachers can't be bothered, online stores can't be bothered to verify IDs on *firearm sales*. See what I mean?
It's one thing to be open and tolerant. It's another entirely to *Neglect* people and to treat them as if they don't even exist.
But hey, I get this. It all started at the top, back in 1980, when "greed is good" officially got off of the ground. Somebody had to create a culture and a media that would spread the message that *caring about others* is bad on principle, that it's politically correct or some garbage. Somebody had to so that the One Percenters would be *freed* to treat people like they were disposable and so much garbage.
And well, when anyone can be outsourced and discarded in their life's work at *any time* for *no reason*....the attitude filters all the way down. Pretty soon, it isn't just the Companies that don't care, it's the churches and the teachers and the doctors...
And so you end up with a Sick Society, where Greed is *God*, has been for decades, and wherein people aren't *allowed* to be kind, to be nice, or to *care* without being attacked and/or exploited somehow.
You end up with a society where *neglect* and an utter *lack of* standards of conduct are the norms. Which all points to people not caring, and people being brainwashed into that "can't be bothered" state that lets other human beings get treated like garbage until they snap.
That's the kind of society we live in. A *Non* Society that doesn't give a damn, and openly punishes those who do.
Thanks for your time. And....remember, you can *do* something about this, doing something about this *might* even be a good idea. ^_^

You know, I don't think that you will get stepped on if you're nice. People often mix up being nice with being shy and passive. You can be a strong, confident, assertive individual, and still be friendly, diplomatic, and tactful, the things that I consider nice.
But it's true...We do live in a sick society.....It seems to me like most people have lost the values that were at one time respected, and it makes me sad.

I have been trying to figure that out for a long time. I am nice, which I guess means I am not as good as others that aren't.
People don't get to know the ones who are labeled nice and never realize how much there is to that person. I am not just nice... I am so many other things, too.

Society isn't to blame for nice being bad - what matters is what the individual thinks. Do you think nice is bad? I think nice is nice and bad is bad. I don't think nice is ever bad, but sometimes bad can be nice ;-)

Yes, it's too bad that nice people and acts are often frowned upon, and even considered as bad. Our society has mostly become one where bad has taken over as the new good.

Who says nice is bad? There is a time for being nice and a time for being bad.
