growth regulators are the type of product I think you're looking for. Often used at golf courses, growth regulators are chemicals and do harm the environment.
when you add a "product", usually that means a man made chemical
Tackling this from a nature friendly prospective, I would try to change the growing conditions of the grass... give it more of what it doesn't want... less water, light, depending on the type of grass, cut it really short
other natural alternatives that I can think of are:
plant trees- they will block sun and use water
plant flower beds
install shredded mulch

You could use RoundUp(glyphosate) from the hardware store and dilute it(Maybe 4x) with water. Glyphosate is systemic and might curl the grass in small doses but it should not kill it.

I'm fairly certain these are restricted chemicals, that is you'd need a license and insurance to buy and apply them.

Did you mention what type grass? That would be important too. I've yet to read anything glowing and PGR's in lawn applications.
