In physics we were asked to "guess" why when a train hooks up with a cart?

It hooks up, then revereses, comes to a complete stop and and then starts to go forward. I have no idea....

It hooks up, then revereses, comes to a complete stop and and then starts to go forward. and the question was why does it erverse and stop before going forward.

The coupling mechanism requires a "bumping" force, produced by a push, to engage. See the ref.
