I have a 100% free combination. First you want to get a free anti virus that is good well known. You might see others saying that you should get AVG anti virus or Antivira anti virus. First off, AVG has a detection rate of about 82.9% detection rate. Also Antivira antivirus isn't even on the top ten list. Plus it does not have a better real-time protection system than Avast. Trust me I have been Working for Microsoft for years and Avasst is definetely better than AVG with a detection rate of 92.7%. The only known free antivirus that has a detection rate of 99.9% was AOL's antivirus powered by Kaspersky. The only problem was, they only had it out for about a year, so they made a new deal with Mcafee. So now there antivirus is not as good as their old one was. Now you want an antispyware program that is free. You basically want several antispyware programs to make sure you get rid of all the crap. It is bad to have more than one Antivirus, but it is good to have more than one anti-spyware. My favoritre spyware removers are AVG Anti spyware , which detects a lot of unknown spyware. My other one is Spybot and Adaware, I reccomend you run them at the same time, it gets all the suckers trying to slip through the cracks. Then you want a free full time protection of antispyware. I reccomend Spyware Terminator. Also when Spyware Terminator asks you to dowbnload ClamAV say yes. I know I had said no, having more than one antivirus, but Clam AV is only a remover and nothing else, so it is ok to have it. Enjoy and say goodbye to ****!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! on you computer

Download and run one of the antivirus programs advised by answerer #1. I'd recommend Avast.

The real reason I'm posting is to advise you to NOT turn off your system restore as advised by another answerer. You should only do that when you know *for sure* that the infection has gotten into your restore files. To see what a Micosoft MVP says about turning off system restore, go to the link below and scroll down to the yellow lightbulb where it says "Tip."

Download the programs linked below. Install them. Update them. Scan your pc with them, and do so weekly.

If you have System Restore turned on, the Restore files may be infected, and trying to reinfect your pc. I turn off that feature, reboot to delete the files, then turn it on after a full system scan with AVG.

Turning off System Restore.
(right-click My Computer, Properties, System Restore tab, check the box to turn off System Restore on all drives.)

Restart your PC, and hold down the F8 key.
When you see the Boot Menu appear (black screen white letters), choose SAFE MODE.

Run a FULL SYSTEM SCAN with AVG.
You can heal or quarentine anything found.

You can also run Spybot and AdAware while in Safe Mode. I suggest you do a full system scan. Get rid of anything they find.

To exit Safe Mode, just restart your PC normally.

AVG Antivirus - Free Antivirus Software
(CNET: "AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition is the most popular free solution available at no cost to home users and provides the high level of detection capability that millions of users around the world trust to protect their computers.")

Ad-Aware - Free Antispyware Software
(CNET: "One of the first applications built to find and remove adware and spyware, Ad-Aware 2007's excellent reputation is well-justified.")

Spybot Search&Destroy - Free Antispyware/Antitrojan Software
Some REALLY great features of Spybot Search&Destroy: Its ability to help your PC block known spyware/hijacker sites with Immunize feature, a Secure Shredder for truly removing files from your PC, and Startup, which allows you to view the files starting with Windows.

SuperAntiSpyware
SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition is 100% Free and will detect and remove thousands of Spyware, Adware, Malware, Trojans, KeyLoggers, Dialers, Hi-Jackers, and Worms. SUPERAntiSpyware features many unique and powerful technologies and removes spyware threats that other applications fail to remove.

Hope this helps.

Too many symptoms to mention. However, I have listed a few anti virus and a few anti spyware programs that are available for download and are completely free: I will not get involved with the rights and wrongs of each package or its effectiveness or indeed “This is best” or “This is crap” statements. Whatever you do, just make sure you have one of each type installed, updated and fully working:

It becomes slow, run a virus scan. Norton, AVG , Avast are free antivirus software. Ad-aware, Ewido are free spyware removers. You can download free softwares at http://fixit.in/antivirus.html and http://fixit.in/spywareremover.html

If you are running Windows without current AntiVirus software, then most likely there's a virus. Though one could say that Windows itself is a virus.
