Vertical columns on the periodic table represent a group or “family” of elements. Group 11 consists of copper, silver, gold, and roentgenium which are known as the "copper family". (Roentgenium was discover in 1994; but since it only has a half-life of 3.6 seconds, it is not very useful.)

Gold, silver, and copper are all relatively inert, corrosion-resistant metals. They all have a face centered cubic (FCC) crystal structure, which make them compatible for alloying over a very wide range of compositions. Also, this family of elements all have one s-orbital electron on top of a filled shell. This is what gives them some of the same properties.
