Depending on how it was asked, you might be looking for the number of 1x1 cubes plus the number of 2x2 cubes plus the number of 3x3 cubes. If so, that's 27 + T +1, where the only nonobvious part is the magnitude of T = # of 2x2 subcubes.

Well, a 2x2 subcube will touch exactly one corner of the big cube, and there's exactly one for each corner, so there are 8 overall.
