I had a pelvic and pap smear which was my first ever last tuesday night. My doctor says they will call if something is wrong. If the pap happened to come back abnormal do you think the doctor would have called by now? It will be exactly a week tonight. For those of you who have had somthing wrong with your pap, how long after your appt did the doctor tell you? Thanx

Most likely you would have heard if there was anything other than a normal result by now. The turnaround time on a Pap smear is only a few days.

Typically, if your results are normal, the doc will either send you a postcard or just not bother getting in touch with you. They would definitely call you, however, if you had a negative result. When I had an abnormal Pap I had the exam on a Monday and got the call on thursday.

You can always call your doctor's office and ask, too. That's what they're there for.

If something was abnormal about your pap smear it will probably be 5 to 10 tens before the results come back. And if you don't get a call after 10 days you can call and ask them about your results. But I would not worry.

I had an abnormal pap last year. They didn't call and I assumed that nothing was wrong but I wanted to get a copy of the test results so I called them after 6 weeks and they told me that I would have to have a second test called a colposcopy. Although it's unlikely that your doctor would neglect to tell you, if you don't hear back within 3 weeks, it wouldn't be a bad idea to call. Don't expect to hear back right away though. Test results take 1-2 weeks minimum. Don't worry.

Two weeks after mine, I got a note in the mail because mine was abnormal, but they had tested for HPV, and since that was negative, they weren't in a hurry so they mailed the note to me.

My doctor always says give it 2 weeks, but don't assume that no news is good news. After 2 weeks, if you don't get a call, give the office a call and see what's up.

It takes about a week or two to get the results back but I would recommend going ahead and calling to find out the results (it's ok to do this, I've had to do it myself a couple times) because sometimes they can get very busy.
