I usually leave a comment on the question page thanking the questioner for the best answer pick; I usually won't contact someone directly unless they put a comment that I'd like to respond to.

no ones ever emailed me to thank me for the best answer i gave and i never did that either. i think leaving a thank you comment is sufficient enough.

i dont think it is necessary but it is proper because at times your answer is the only one ...........and the questioner has no choice but to select yours

I used to. Then I started seeing that the voters picked it, so the asker gets no thanks from me.
