Wow, that's at least 15-25 layers, I can tell you right off the bat.

The layering is done with selecting and feathering images, not blocks like a square selection but a generous selection around the person's head. There are various amounts of transparency used in each layer, from about 60-80%, so they look more 'blended', than just a 100% layer. The key is in the transparency of the layers (that includes the text layers as well, though they are more 80-90%.)

Besides all those techniques in the first response, I also see examples of gradiated masks.
