Atlantic, Eastern, Central, Mountain, Pacific, Alaska.
You did say North America, not just the United States.
The lower 48 states only have 4 time zones, but Alaska is far enough west to be in a different time zone. The Atlantic provinces of Canada are on Atlantic time zone, except for Newfoundland which is in its' own time zone 1/2 hour earlier than Atlantic. Because it isn't a standard (one hour) time zone, I didn't include it.
Sometimes Greenland and Hawaii are also included in North America, but most people generally think of Canada, the United States, and Mexico as comprising North America. If you include those two, your total could be as high as nine.
6 zones total, 7 if you count Newfoundland, and 9 if you include Greenland and Hawaii

If it's 5:00 p.m in New York, then its 2:00 p.m in L.A. North America is divided into 4 time zones: Eastern Standard Time, Central Standard Time, Mountain Standard Time, and Pacific Standard Time. New York is located in the Eastern Standard Time Zone and L.A in the Pacific Standard Time Zone.
