This hole is about an inch wide and around seven inches long but is not in an area where it will be walked on. I need to plug it with some thing. I'm not a handy person and I haven't got a lot of money and all I need is cheap, easy cosmetic fix. Any ideas?

There's nothing underneath the hole, just the downstairs ceiling about eight inches away so a normal filler is out.

I would cut a piece of wood to the size and either glue it in position or take the board up and fasten it in from underneath with some sort of bracket (Whatever I had in my box) but if you done want to do that you can buy some grip-fill in a tube and a tool the you put the tube in from any DIY shop. One tube should fill the hole and once it is set it will stay. You can smooth it down with a knife and finish it with sandpaper

With a piece of paper, trace out the shape of the hole, then with a jigsaw, cut out a piece of wood in the same shape. To hold it in place, I'd either tape or hot glue a small piece of scrap wood to the top to hold on to. Use this makeshift handle to lower it in place while you, or a friend toe nails it in place (hammer or shoot a small nail through the original floor at an angle so it goes through the new piece also, a nail gun would be beneficial) use several nails to increase stability. For the wood, all you would need to do is go to the local lumber yard, cabinet shop etc. and ask for a piece of scrap wood that was big enough, and close to the same shade. As for the jigsaw and nail gun, hopefully you have a handy friend. For being relatively free, this method will result in the best finished.

Well lets see now, first you should go to your local hardware store, I prefer Home Depot or Lowe's because the pricing is very reasonable, purchase a can of foam, you should be able to find this can in the insulation department, then follow the directions on the can and fill the hole with the foam, allow the proper amount of time to dry and then trim off the excess. Then if you want to, apply liquid nail or wood glue to the top. That will make it hard. It can also be painted.

I would just replace the board, cut out the damaged section so the cut ends rest on the joists for a good fixing, or fix timber to the underside of the board and fix it via screws from above. then use saw dust and wood glue mixed to glue in small fillets of timber to make good.

get a bit of wood 10 inches long by 3 inches wide ..screw a long screw into it in the middle ..not too deep as it is just to hold on to the wood and removed later ..drill a small hole either side of hole ..about 1 inch from side ....then lower wood into hole ..holding with the screw ..then hold it in position by fixing two screws into holes drilled ..remove holding screw ..then fill hole either with another bit of wood or anything you like

you don't say if a floor covering is to be put over it? if it is you can use some hard board about 3mm thick (the type you find on the back of kitchen cupboard or wardrobes.) with underlay and carpet you shouldn't notice it.

I would seriously consider replacing the board, it shouldn't cost a lot, but then again it's the kind of thing that would bug me.
