I know quite a few. Most work in small business, food industry, or the like that dont offer insurance. But personally I have always taken jobs that did have insurance for employees. It is not always a choice for some to have insurance. But having said that I am NOT for universal health care. I dont need the government involved in my life anymore than it already is.

Plenty. I have friends who work as adjunct instructors at colleges, for employers too small to offer benefits, or part-time. Anybody who is a temp or a contract employee does not have benefits. Many employers offer benefits to part-time employees, after they work a certain number of hours and maintain an pretty high average number of hours to keep their benefits. Someone who works a couple of part-time jobs to make ends meet may not work enough hours at either job to qualify for benefits. Some types of employers - like grocery stores - are notorious for keeping employees working just under the minimum number of hours required to qualify for benefits. Also, keep in mind that while employers generally pay much of the cost of benefits for the employee, there are few emloyers who cover the cost of benefits for dependents. So, someone may be able to afford their own insurance but not be able to afford to insure their spouse or their kids. I've had benefits with my current job for a year, but before that I had no benefits for 5 years. Even now, I have decent medical, dental only because I pay extra for it (and it costs me more than my medical) and no vision coverage (I could only afford dental or vision). Before we switched insurance this month dental wasn't even an option.

I personally know several. Once of my friends has a job that doesn't offer insurance. And their bills + student loans make it so they could never afford it right now. When they hurt their ankle, they had to "wait and see" if it was really broken, or just sprained.
Nationally, I know there is about 45 million.
