Milo of Crotona and Polydamas in ancient Greece killed wild beasts with their hands. At the turn of the century, George Hackenscmit, the Russian Lion, was stronger than anyone else in the ring. He placed 3rd in the first amateur world weightlifting championships in Vienna in 1897 and grew bigger and stronger. 320 lbs. Stanislaus Czybiscow hated to have to wrrestle, "that divill of a man", as he called Hack. in the 1920's, Jimmy Londos, the Golden Greek, was a great star. "The Terrible Turk" was one man to admire. he made a fortune in the USa wrestling and had most of his money in gold when he retired and returned to Turkey. His ship sank, and he died saving fellow passengers. i have some DVd's taht show some wrestlers of the 1940's to 1960's. you may be familiar with them, so i just told about earlier ones.
