it's -1. The 2 cancels with the 2 in the denominator so all that's left is 1, but the negative stays with the answer.

Just add on the negative sign
To remember when to add the negative make a tic tac toe board. Go diganol with +s and fill the res in with -s then you get:
+ - - pos. time neg=neg
- + - neg. time pos.= neg
- - +neg time neg=pos.

Just rephrase it to make sense to your life.
Say you owe some money.
-2...turn into $2 owed to someone. (Owed because it's negative).
1/2...you are responsible for half the debt.
That would mean you, personally, owe $1.
Or in math terms,
-2 x 1/2 = -1
