I know there are going to be answers w/ the the name Steve-Y, but i want others also...

Of course your going to get my answer as Joe Sakic, but I do love Saku Koivu , and when Pierre Turgeon (MTL) and Micheal Peca (NYI) were captains, because they did so much for the team

Like I'm telling you-I have no idea, what those scores mean and i really disagree...You really can't rate a captain, its just an opinion.....Those ratings are trash, how can you say Sakic, or even for that matter Bourque, Yzerman.....Wut the hell do those 0s mean, plz tell me, I strangle those experts who made those ratings, Which reminds me I hate experts/writers, Nobody should be paid to critize any players, unless its stat related. otherwise why is money being dumped when all they do is give you phony predictions and dumb biased opinions. If it wasn't for pools and gambling, experts would be out of their jobs. THE TRUE EXPERTS ARE THE FANS, and the players/coaches..

well J.S...1st off why why are you saying secondly for the 2nd reason and the 4th...... Richard was probably one of the best, if not the best.., but i just don't like RATING and putting them into numbers to some ppl its offensive, because you should not measure the greatness of players, because players mean more to teams then just stats and Cups...AND SECONDLY or finally, montreal just over powered everyone we all know Montreal was the center of hockey in those days much like the NFL is here in the U.S really no expansion, so compared to other parts there was really no comparison in skill

That story came from Paul O, but I remember that article well.

Here's my bit.

In 2005 during the lockout, CBC/Ron MacLean did a roundtable with Dick Irvin, Mike Keenan, Scotty Bowman, Brian McFarlane, Don Cherry, Bob Nicholson, Stan Fischler, and Wayne Gretzky.

They were each asked to pick the 5 best captains in NHL history.

Yzerman got a 5th place vote from Keenan
Messier didn't get any votes.

A fan asked Keenan why he didn't pick the greatest captain of all-time...Mark messier - Keenan laughewd and said that Mark didn't deserve it.

Scotty was asked why he didn't choose Yzerman, he claimed that Yzerman wasn't the best captain he had ever had.

On both cases, I have to agree with the experts

Here is how the experts chose
1. Maurice Richard (6-1-0-1-0) 36 pts
2. Wayne Gretzky (1-4-0-1-0) 27 pts
3. Jean Beliveau (1-1-3-0-0) 21 pts
4. Bobby Clarke (0-1-4-1-1) 19 pts
5. Mario Lemieux (0-1-1-2-0) 11 pts
6. George Armstrong (0-0-0-2-0) 4 pts
7. Yvan Cournoyer (0-0-0-1-1) 3 pts
8. Dave Keon (0-0-0-0-1) 1 pt
9. John Bucyk (0-0-0-0-1) 1 pt
10. Joe Sakic (0-0-0-0-1) 1 pt
11. Steve Yzerman (0-0-0-0-1) 1 pt
12. Brian Sutter (0-0-0-0-1) 1 pt
13. Ray Bourque (0-0-0-0-1) 1 pt

My personal top 3
Richard
Clarke
Gretzky

AvsOwnNHL.........I read your comments to the last responder and even I can tell what the 0's mean.

If you were a true hockey fan, you would know what they mean too because that is how the NHL shows the results for trophies.

Secondly, you 'don't care' what the experts say, the true experts are the 'fans and players/coaches'.

Last I looked, the players/coaches picked captains and not the fans

Secondly, in the list of 'experts you don't agree with' are 4 hockey coaches, a former player, and the director of hockey canada. People who know something about picking captains.

I remember this episode, and Stevie Y got chopped up pretty good from all of them.

Fans are fans, most of them aren't very knowledgeable about the game, but they enjoy watching it. That is something that is very obvious to me from reading boards like this and hfboards.

I'm a VP of a large American healthcare organization, and I have dealt with many NHL players and executives through various charitable events, and based on the informal conversations I've had with them about the CBC episode in question, most of the players and executives are in agreement. So, if the people who are influential in making those decisions are happy with the list, then I am happy with the list.

And, Maurice Richard is the only captain in NHL history to win a Stanley Cup every year he was captain, and if that isn't good enough to be the greatest, I don't know what is.

And if Yzerman is the greatest captain in history..........why wasn't he captain of the 1991 Canada Cup team? or the 1996 World Cup team? or the 1998 Olympic Team? or the 2002 Olympic team?

Just curious...because being the greatest means none better, and if somebody else is doing the job you are supposedly the greatest at....you ain't the greatest!

Messier leading the Rangers to the cup. As much as I hated him, Bobby Clarke of the Broad Street Bullies era of Flyers. Jean Beliveau, the classiest Canadien ever. Stevie Y of Detroit, Stan Mikita Blackhawks, Super Mario of the Pens. Sakic in same class as Beliveau...

LOL @ anyone who says Stevie Y. Wait until LITY comes on. Something about he became a better player when he switched his attitude and started leading by example but it took a swift kick in the *** from Bowman to make it happen.
I'd go with Le Gros Bill, number four for the Habs Jean Beliveau. I think he was captain for 5 or 6 cups.

Super Joe all the way!!! While I did like Lemieux more as a player, I never quite saw him as captain. Sakic is a captain, and one of the best ever. Go Avs!

~

Derek: Forsberg was never a captain. Sakic has always been captain for the Avs. Except for several days when he was injured in 97-98. Lefebvere was captain then.

My favorite captain of all-time is, of course Mario Lemieux. People may remember him for being super-talented, but he was one hell of a leader. Keep this in mind: how could you not be inspired by a man who played hurt constantly, who worked hard, AND managed to be the best player in the freaking world while beating back pain, hip pain, fatigue, cheap shots, and a little thing called cancer.

My favorite current captain: Jarome Iginla. An outstanding leader in every sense of the word.

Mine is Mario Lemieux. He has saved the Penguins from bankruptcy a couple of time. Not only with the Penguins but when he meets up with Gretzky it something special in hockey and out. They both almost saved the NHL from the blackout. Most importantly he is a cancer survivor.

Go Pens!

Yes, I do have to say Yzerman. Aside from being a tremendous player and spending his whole career with the Red Wings, he is humble, soft spoken, and wise. What a shame he retired!

All though he is new to the captaincy, I am a fan of Sidney Crosby of Pittsburgh. He is a phenominal player, arguably the best, and has lots of potential. Although he may not be as good of a leader as someone like Sacic,he will definitely be able to lead the team to a Stanley Cup victory.

Kelly Buchberger -- no skill, all heart, would block shots with his face, do anything to win kind of guy, just a great leader. Every time he scored, it was like the Oilers had won the Cup.

Ray Bourque as well. I hope this doesn't require much explanation. The guy was one of a kind.
