Copper IUD makes it hard for sperm to get into fallopian tubes. If fertilization occurs, the copper IUD discourages implantation. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/birth-control/BI99999/PAGE=BI00023

"Copper IUD. Copper is toxic to sperm. It makes the uterus and fallopian tubes produce fluid that kills sperm. This fluid contains white blood cells, copper ions, enzymes, and prostaglandins." http://www.webmd.com/sex/birth-control/intrauterine-device-iud-for-birth-control

Merina = horomonal IUD.
"The hormonal IUD (Mirena) is a T-shaped plastic frame with thread attached. The IUD is inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy. Once in place, it inhibits fertilization, as the IUD impedes the sperm's journey to the fallopian tubes. If fertilization occurs, the device prevents the embryo from attaching to the uterine wall. The hormonal IUD also releases progestin, which inhibits sperm mobility and makes the uterus unsuitable for a pregnancy." http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/birth-control/BI99999/PAGE=BI00024

all IUD are abortification methods of birthcontrol.
copper IUD's do not prevent sperm or ovulation at all, but by their constant irratation of the uterus lining they prevent an embryo from implanting - they do nothing to prevent conception. Merina's use progesterone as well which has show to have some effect on preventing ovulation (in some women) but also changes the cervical mucus so that it is harder for sperm to swim up as well as makes the lining of the uterus thinner in addition to the irratation that the IUD itself causes.
