Winter = 100
Spring = 100 + (100 x 10%) = 100 + 10 = 110
Summer sold 10% of 110 which = 11 cows
110-11= 99 cows left

The farmer has 100 and then it increases by 10%. That means that the farmer now has:

100 + 10% of 100, or
100 + (.10)(100)
= 100 + 10
= 110.

Now this new number is DECREASED by 10% which means the farmer now has:

110 - 10% of 110, or
110 - .10(110)
= 110 - 11
= 99

Your answer is 99.

10% of 100 = 10 so there are 110 in spring...then 10% of 110 is 11 and 110 - 11 = 99...so there are 99 left in summer.

Answer = 99

Come ON people, lets not attack the question creater. Some of you even dissed him when YOU got the question WRONG!

Lets see here..

Of course it's not 100..

Since it increased by 10 percent:

1.1(100) = 110

So 110 during the summer.

Now lets see how much it decreased.

.1(110) = 11

110 - 11 = 99

There are 99 cows left.

What kind of cows were they and how much hay did he feed them that winter? How many inches of snowfall was there that winter? What month in the summer were the cows sold? What other animals did he have besides cows, sheep and goats? Did they also eat hay? What did he feed the ducks and geese?

100 plus 10% growth is 110. If you sell 10% of 110, then you are back to 99, because 10% of 110 is eleven.
