thank you for your answers, yes i do have a heater in the tank already, which is reading 75-77, i was not sure if i could leave the water over night and then put it in the tank or put a new heater in the bucket to get the right temperture over night.

You can either let it sit in a container overnight to bring it at least to room temperature (be sure to still add conditioner if your water supply uses chloramine - this doesn't evaporate out of the water) or you can run both hot and cold at the same time to get it to about the same temperature as what's in the tank (you can use it right away, but you'll need to add conditioner for either chlorine or chloramine).

Either way will get it close enough that the fish don't have a shock from too big of a temperature change, and keeps you from having to use another heater.

You could use a heater for it to get warm faster but what I do is just get water out of the sink, let it sit for 24 hours atleast, and remeber to add the dechlorinizer to it. Just pour the water into the tank.

you should put a heater in the tank because tropical fish need warmer water
and try to fill the tank with the same temperature water as was in it before or else the fish are going to get a big shock

what is the water temp of the tank now. use room Temp water you don't want the water temp to fluctuate a lot. be sure you only do a 20% water change yoy justned to vaccum the gravel get all that poop ad exess food out. make sure yor heater is unpluggd s it wont get dmaged.
