my first child couldnt' sit without falling until 10 months, she would tip backwards... When she started to crawl she than got much better balance. Everyone is different. Just relax. If you are tense and put your kids on a schedule and worry when they dont' make it on time, you could end up with some axeity in yourself and your kids.

Can he roll over, start to push up on his tummy etc? If so, don't worry too much. Some babies are later at developing than others, and no baby reaches all milestones at a certain time. They usually won't worry unless he isn't reaching other milestones or starts skipping them, and he isn't sitting up by 9 months. Try putting him in a sitting position with a Boppy pillow around him for support, and plenty of other cushions to catch him if he falls. That will help strengthen his trunk muscles. But really, it's too early to worry.

Both of my kids were still working on it at six months. Most likely your son is absolutely fine, especially because he's hit all other milestones so far. I'm sure that you have a 6 month well baby check scheduled, so bring up your concern to your pediatrician, but don't make any special trips there for this yet. Even by 8 months old only 90% of babies are sitting unassisted. Here's an article from babycenter.com for you to read: http://www.babycenter.com/0_developmental-milestones-sitting_6505.bc

My daughter will be 6 months in a few days....she was born 2 months early, though. She just barely rolled from her back to her tummy today for the first time. The doctor told me she may be behind in some things. She also told me that the guidelines are just that...guidelines.....they are not meant to be deadlines. He'll do it on his own, when he's ready. Don't worry too much. As a matter of fact, enjoy it even more......he'll be your lil baby that much longer! That's the way i'm looking at it w/my daughter. All 3 of my daughters did things at different ages.

I don't know your son but I can testify to the fact that my kids sound like yours!

My first was sitting up and doing a lot of things at around 5 months while my second seemed to do things slower. I was concerned at 6 months when he wasn't sitting up (and didn't seem to care to ) but I just kept with it....when I would put him down it was in a way to make him sit up instead of on his back and about 2 weeks later the little booger was a pro. Guess he just wanted to make sure it was his choice and not his :)

I was, and still am, very guilty of using my first child as a guideline so I have to make sure if I think he truly is behind that I research it before I make myself paranoid.

Just be consistent with help sit up and if you don't see improvement I am sure your pediatrician can offer some words of wisdom at your next appointment!

Buy a bumbo seat, they are really cool because as soon as the infant can support their head, they can start sitting in them. This will help strengthen stomach muscles. Also make sure that he is getting a lot of tummy time. This will help him use muscles necessary for sitting up, when he rolls around etc. Also the highchair is another place where he can "sit". I would not worry too much. But check out that bumbo seat. They are about $40 new, but can get them cheaper used on ebay.

My daughter was 6 months old yesterday, she is only just learning to sit up, she still tips to the sides. Each and every baby is different and accomplish milestones at different ages, try not to worry about it so much at the moment, im sure he will sit in his own time

Try not to worry, its natural I know to compare one kid to the other, but...
Has your son reached other milestones. For example, can he hold his head up, roll over, bring his hands to his mouth? If he is on track with everything else, he'll sit up soon enough.
It sounds like you are doing a great job at mothering your boys. Keep up the good work!

Do you provide him with opportunities to build the muscles to sit up? Or does your son spend most of his day in bouncy chairs/swings, strollers, on the floor, in the playpen.

I ask because one mom I know had the same problem at 7 months her son was not sitting. The health nurse yelled at her, her doctor yelled at her and finally her husband realized that his wife was a little silly. See she didn't believe in holding the baby -pretty much ever. Once they started holding his hands while he tried to sit up from a reclined position and holding him in their laps with minimal support he was sitting in 2 weeks.

The Denver Developmental Screening Test is a recognized method of determining babies at risk for developmental delay. One parameter is sitting up without support. According to the DDST, only one baby in four sits alone at six months, and three in four are sitting alone by seven months. Your infant is well within the norm.
