Boy, Darth, you opened up a can of worms this time. I'm too attention deficit to do anything but create a variety in my listening. My main stay is electric blues anymore since I play the stuff (seems the closest to what I cut my teeth on), but that in and of itself is pretty diverse. My latest purchases in an attempt to recapture some of the vinyl:
Elton John - Tumbleweed Connection
Joe Byrd and the Field Hippies - American Metaphysical Circus
Who - Quadrophenia
Bob Seger - Back in 72
The Flock (self titled)
The Kingbees (self titled)
Ten Years After - Ssssh.
Cactus - Cactology
Alvin Lee - In Tennessee
Paul Revere and the Raiders - Just Like Us
Tommy Bolin - Private Eyes
Uriah Heep - The Magician's Birthday
Captain Beyond (self titled)
Billy Cobham - Spectrum
Because I like such variety, it's no wonder that one of my "default" groups to listen to is Steely Dan; consistent only in their quality of presentation. Without the vast spectrum of colors to our respective palettes all of our listening would be quite drab and monochromatic. What say you?
P.S. I'm not even going to tell you how long it took me to teach myself how to play The Rain Song . . .

Variety's the spice of life, as they say(ooops, just noticed that someone else has said that...). I'm into so many genres that I can be listening to Prog ("The Yes Album" is a real favourite at the moment....I love "Starship Trooper"- especially the "Wurm" section..the way the sound builds up is superb ), and I'll then put on "Love Bites" by The Buzzcocks, for example. Other stuff in heavy rotation in my house right now- "Sketches of Spain" by Miles Davis and "Straight out the Jungle" by The Jungle Brothers

Variety is the spice of life!
My musical tastes have probably made their broadest evolution in the last 5 years, and I love / like all of these :~
Classic Rock {60's & 70's}
Prog Rock {included with Classic}
Glam Rock {included with Classic}
80's Rock
1 Goth Rock band ~ {Type O Negative}
Acoustic ~ {Nick Drake, etc}
Celtic
Folk
World
New Age {Enigma ; Delerium}
Classical
Jazz / Swing
Blues
*Edit :~ 1950's Rock N' Roll {how could I forget?!}
On any day I can change from one genre to another within a few minutes. I have a selection of home-made compelation CDs that cover some of those genres ~ so who knows what it will be like once I get an MP3 player!
now playing :~ Celtic New Year ~ Van Morrison
{It's been Van all day as I'm selecting tracks to burn :) }
*now playing :~ Aqualung {Orchestral version}
~ Ian Anderson & Neue Philharmonie Frankfurt

Well Punk is my primary.
Followed closely by various different artists of similar genres (Sondre Lerche, Matisyahu, etc).
However, these are often outdone by various traditional music styles from around the world. Particularly Irish and Traditional Chinese.
I will often turn an ear to Country and Bluegrass. But, it's hard to find the time when it immediately leads me to the joy that is jazz/40s big band (love Tommy Dorsey, Dixieland, Miles Davis, etc).
And don't even get me started on Lounge/Rat Pack music that seems to scream Vegas!!! It's what you listen to when you need to Live It Up.
I have even been known to crank a little Classical here and there. Most of my Mozart is on vinyl. It just sounds better on vinyl.
Other than that, I will listen to some random samples of genres here and there, but I don't actually own anything from it like I do the rest of these previously mentioned genres.

My music gets pretty diverse. I listen to alot of what you listen to (Zep, Floyd, Deep Purple) but I also listen to the softer oldies like Jackson Brown, Billy Joel, Simon and Garfunkel. I also enjoy Southern rock (Allman Brothers, CCR, Tome Petty)Not only do I listen to the classics, but I like some modern prog/metal (Opeth, Dream Theater) and indie rock. Alot of the indie I listen to (the Shins, Beulah, Supergrass, Iron and Wine, Jeffrey Lewis) can be extremely upbeat or acoustic and mellow. I also had one stint in my youth where all I listen to was classical music, and I still love Stravinsky to this day (his music is really chilling). I also love alternative so along with that I have Radiohead, The Cure REM etc. And of course, you alreay know my love of Prog.
Like just compare how they all sound... its a big variety:
Led Zeppelin:

Weirdest Shuffle expierence:
Marilyn Manson, Mozart, Simon and Garfenkel, King Crimson, The Doors, Chicago Soundtrack, The Stills, Metallica etc.

I have a wide wide WIDE variety of music that I like. I love big band music from the 40's like the Glenn Miller Orchestra. I love Polka (I come from a very polish town, we have a polish festival!) I love all of the 50's music, I'm not so big on Motown music though... I love southern rock like Lynyrd Skynyrd, I love Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd... I love all of the 80's hair bands, I like most easy bands/groups like Hall & Oates, and I love all of the singer/songwriters like Cat Stevens, Neil Young... I'm even a little ashamed of myself for liking an Atreyu song.. I'm usually anti- new rock. Anywho, I like a little bit of everything, of course except for country and rap. It's okay to like, it's just not for me.
Also, you chose great songs. One, The Rain Song, and Starship Trooper are all favorites of mine. Soon is also another GREAT by Yes. The Rain song, gorgeous chords indeed.

Some days I'm in the mood for some death metal like Illdisposed. Sometimes I get a hankering for some country and drink some beer while listening to Hank III. Once in a while I bounce in my car listening to Lil Jon. I like variety.
