Anything but history, country histories, or the obvious hot button issues(abortion, gay marriage, capital punishment, etc.) I am thinking about global warming.

How about something that you're interested in. Find something in your community that you have a a big interest or issue with. If you are actually interested in the topic, your paper will be a lot easier to write. You mentioned global warming, which is a good topic, but try to get more specific. What can your community do to help global warming? What SHOULD your community do? What SHOULDN'T it do? Does your community have the right resources to improve global warming? etc etc etc

Hope this helps.

How about something kind of out the box. I did a speech (which required a research paper) on post conviction DNA testing. I was kind of skeptical about it at first but I found it very interesting how many people have been exonerated from prison or better yet, have not been exonerated after being found innocent due to DNA testing done years later. It also was an interesting topic for my class.

Last year I had to do a research paper on two careers of my choice. I chose veterinary technology because I thought I wanted to be a vet tech at the time, and forensic pathology because Dana Scully of The X-Files is a forensic pathologist.

I agree with The Brown-Eye Girl Spousal Abuse should be mentioned at every chance. I've gotten to know several victims. And their stores are hideous tales of torture.
